Learn more about the Rofe Family
George Rofe (July 21, 1854 - Feb. 26, 1930) was born in Southfield to Robert and Charlotte (Lambert) Rofe.
His father, Robert Rofe emigrated from Canterbury, Kent, England—marrying in Kalamazoo and then moving to Grosse Ile, MI. The Rofes settled permanently in Southfield between 1849 and 1852.
George Rofe married Emma J. Sturman in 1882. They had 3 children: Horace George (b. Nov. 1883) Elsie (b. July 1886) Gladys (b. Nov. 1890).
According to his diaries, George purchased the family farm (located on what is now the southeast corner of Southfield Road and Lincoln Dr.) from his brother William Lambert Rofe on Jan. 31, 1884.
The merchant ledger of James Sturman says, “George Rofe quit farming on April 2, 1902 and moved to Pontiac.” In Pontiac, George took a position as a laborer in a forge plant.
